Check Your Credit Record

You've all seen the advertising for paid credit reports that have the word "free" in them, but the U.S. government requires all of the major credit bureaus to provide you with a no-cost credit report once each year.  To see your report, make sure to use the government's site for this no-cost credit report.

If you find any inaccuracies in your record, make the correction request directly on the online reports you access or at the phone number provided.  You'll be able to access your record again at no charge to verify that the correction was made.

Rule of Thumb:  Since the bureaus gather information from similar sources, you can stagger your requests to be from one of the three bureaus every 4 months.  This way, you get checks on your record at 3 points along the year for free, instead of getting 3 records covering the same point in time.
