Because much of your personal information is already available online, and there's nothing you can do about that, you are not going to be able to prevent every possible instance of identity theft.  Therefore, the best way to protect your credit identity is to monitor your record and to be prompt in bringing up any suspect activity on your accounts to your creditors.  This is not to say that you should make it easy for thieves to steal your identity, so be deliberate and thoughtful in what you provide to 3rd parties, as well, but recognize your vulnerabilities.
