Whom should you contact about discrepancies and problems and to update your information? Your student loan servicer.
Loan servicers are organizations that help you manage your student loans after they have been disbursed, and particularly when you leave school and enter repayment. For example, they help you identify your deferment and forbearance options should you run into difficulty making your payments after you leave school and start your career.
Special Tip #1 – Some lenders do the servicing themselves, so it is extremely important for you to check all of your loan correspondence (whether by e-mail or regular mail) and to look for the name, phone number, and Web address of your loan servicer.
Special Tip #2 – Working effectively with your loan servicer can help keep your student loans in “Good Standing”, which will help build a solid credit history.
Finding your servicer:
Not sure if your federal loans came from the Direct Loan Program (DLP) or the Federal Family Education Loan Program (FFELP)? The National Direct Student Loan System (NSLDS) can help with that!
